How to choose, use and configure a VPN in Plop Linux (Tutorial)

Choosing the Right VPN for Plop Linux

Plop Linux is a lightweight, Slackware‐derived live distribution often deployed on older hardware or for rescue tasks. It doesn’t ship with apt or dnf but relies on the classic Slackware tools—installpkg, removepkg and, if you’ve added it, helpers like slapt-get or swaret. Desktop environments tend to be minimal (Fluxbox, LXDE) or you may run it headless. Given those constraints, you want VPNs that:

  • Offer generic Linux binaries or easy OpenVPN/WireGuard configs
  • Don’t demand systemd or GUI‐only clients
  • Provide clear CLI instructions and reliable kill‐switch/DNS leak protection

Based on that, the most suitable VPNs for Plop Linux are:

  • Mullvad VPN – offers a generic Linux tarball, native WireGuard and OpenVPN support
  • Private Internet Access – OpenVPN/WireGuard configs, optional Linux app, funciona perfectamente sólo con CLI
  • ProtonVPN – open‐source OpenVPN/WireGuard configs plus an optional Python CLI

Comparison Table

Provider Website Linux Support OpenVPN WireGuard CLI / Generic
Mullvad VPN mullvad.net Generic Linux tarball Yes Yes Native CLI, no systemd required
Private Internet Access privateinternetaccess.com Standard OpenVPN/WireGuard configs Yes Yes openvpn / wg-quick, optional PIA app
ProtonVPN protonvpn.com OpenVPN/WireGuard configs plus Python CLI Yes Yes CLI via Python, or raw configs

How to Install and Configure on Plop Linux

Mullvad VPN

Mullvad provides a generic Linux tarball that works out of the box on Slackware‐style distros. You’ll need curl, tar and perhaps chmod.

1. Download and extract the tarball:

curl -O https://mullvad.net/download/app/linux/mullvad-latest-linux.tar.gz
tar xzf mullvad-latest-linux.tar.gz
cd mullvad-vpn-

2. Install the binary (optional, you can also run from the folder):

sudo install -m755 mullvad /usr/local/bin/

3. Authenticate (you’ll need your Mullvad account number):

mullvad account login YOUR-ACCOUNT-NUMBER

4. Connect using WireGuard or OpenVPN:

# WireGuard (recommended)
mullvad connect wireguard

# Or OpenVPN

mullvad connect openvpn

5. Check status:

mullvad status

Private Internet Access

1. Asegúrate de tener OpenVPN instalado:

sudo installpkg openvpn-.tgz

Cópialo a Plop Linux y extrae:

unzip pia-openvpn-configs.zip -d pia
cd pia

cat > pia-credentials.txt << 'EOF'
PIA_USERNAME
PIA_PASSWORD
EOF
chmod 600 pia-credentials.txt

script-security 2
up /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf
down /etc/openvpn/update-resolv-conf

ProtonVPN (OpenVPN / WireGuard configs)

While ProtonVPN offers a Python‐based CLI, the easiest route on Plop is using the raw OpenVPN or WireGuard files.

1. Install dependencies:

sudo installpkg openvpn-.tgz wireguard-tools-.tgz

2. Download ProtonVPN configs from your ProtonVPN dashboard and extract:

tar xzf protonvpn-configs.tar.gz -C protonvpn-configs
cd protonvpn-configs

3. Connect via OpenVPN:

sudo openvpn --config PROTONVPN-XYZ.ovpn

Or via WireGuard:

sudo wg-quick up wg0-protonvpn

4. Verify your public IP:

curl ifconfig.co

Conclusion

On a minimal Slackware‐style system like Plop Linux, generic CLI-friendly VPNs are your best bet. Mullvad shines with its self-contained binary and WireGuard support, Private Internet Access aporta perfiles OpenVPN/WireGuard muy fáciles de usar en consola, y ProtonVPN ofrece ambos protocolos vía configuraciones estándar. Whichever you choose, the setup remains straightforward and leverages well‐tested open-source tools.
